During my college days I purchased a beach cruiser to get me to a from school. During my junior and senior years I lived just over a mile from my school. The terrain was flat and easy, so a cruiser was perfect for my needs. I bought a cheap cruiser for less than $100 and added a nice basket for my books. It worked for me!
Since graduating and relocating, I haven’t been riding my bike. It’s been sitting outside for the past year, collecting so much rust that I was tempted to just get rid of it. Thankfully, I cleaned it up using a good rag and was able to successfully remove the rust with some good old foil!
I added a bell and cleaned up the seat too. |
It looks almost new! I’ll be hanging onto this bike for easy rides with Daisy 🙂
I also made a dog carrier for my bike basket so that Daisy’s little legs wouldn’t poke through the holes. I’m sure I could have purchased one from the store, but I wanted to save the money and get creative.
I found a super sturdy cardboard computer box (no shame in dumpster diving!), and cut out a rectangle to fit the bottom of my basket. Then, I found some material on clearance ($2 per yard!) and stapled the material to the outside of the cardboard, making sure that the points of the staples came out of the bottom of the cardboard. I also made the fabric shorter for the front so that Daisy could see out and feel a breeze while riding with me.
I tried it out today and Daisy has never seemed more comfy! She immediately lied down and poked her little nose through the bars.
