Minimalism…
I really enjoy this photo. Thriving with only that which is necessary to live, and that’s it. Just meditating on this photo opens my mind and empties my thoughts- the unnecessary anxiety-provoking ones. Zen.
I am tempted to leave it at that, but I suppose I will indulge in an explanation. A personal explanation. Bear with me.
Since being married, I’ve found that parts of our home become stuffy and cluttered so quickly that it is nearly impossible to avoid. The culprit is yours truly. And though my husband has a deep attachment to books and notes (even from his high school days), his few boxes don’t hold a candle to my collection of “stuff.”
I’ve always had a lot of stuff. Whether it was hand-me-down clothing, collectibles, shoes, papers, books, music, you name it. I just had a lot of everything. I will admit that I have the “just in case syndrome.” This is something I’ve always been aware of.

I really enjoy reading Leo Babauta‘s blog. One of his earlier posts, A guide to creating a minimalist home, has given me some inspiration. While I am attracted to the minimalistic home, I really enjoy things from or inspired by India – ornate, beautiful, and embellished. Now, I find that the two can easily be contradictory, but I’ll be working on a balance.
In addition to the previous article, I came upon another article on decluttering. Here, he addresses the root of much of my clutter:
- Clutter is a manifestation of a) holding onto the past and b) fear of what might happen in the future.
- Letting go of clutter is a way to live more mindfully and in the present.
- The act of decluttering itself can be a mindfulness practice.
In my journey for a decluttered home, I’ll be following Leo Babauta’s guide on what a minimalist home looks like. I hope to go through our entire apartment by the end of July– I know, that sounds like a long time from now, but I am super busy with work until mid June.
- Okay, I’m ready!
